Range Murata (村田 蓮爾 Murata Renji?, born October 2, 1968 in Osaka) is a Japanese artist and designer, known for his unique style combining Art Deco and Japanese anime elements. He is best known for his conceptual design work on anime series Last Exile and Blue Submarine No. 6.
He began his career in the early 1990s doing design work for video games, including having done the character designs for the 2003 PlayStation 2 game Spy Fiction.
He has published more than a dozen books of his work, some of the most notable being rule, and futurhythm. He is also voted “Best Artist of the Year” 2006 in the Seiun Award.

In the 34th Zohon-Sotei Competition Exhibition in 2000, comic that Murata planned (the comic department) “FLAT” won Japan Book Publishers Association Chairman Award , in the 38th Zohon Sotei Competition Exhibition in 2004 , won for second time the Japan book publishers Association Chairman Award for what became art book “futurhythm”, also in 2006, has been awarded the 37th nebula Award (art department), and technology is evaluated there as an illustrator [1]. And such Masahiro Ito writed Murata draws illustrations “with a unique atmosphere”[2]. From 2013 he has been working as a cartoon character design in undergraduate course in Kyoto Seika University. In addition, coterie Circle “PASTA’S ESTAB.” in which he has presided over, has announced that original goods came with the illustration collection and design in which he was in charge of[2].
Career
Because he was longing to be car designer, when he realized that in the university majoring in design, retro design, which Murata aimed is difficult, he dropped out. Then, after joining part-time jobs, such as character design of the fighting game by Atlas “Power Instinct” series, moved on to a freelance illustrator and he started coterie activities influenced by the effects of the surroundings.
